Betsy DeVos Wears Crown Of Education Reform For Conservatives Everywhere

The 2016 Presidential Election proved two things simultaneously: there is footing for nationalistic pride on the political stage and that people are willing to embrace outsiders, so long as their promises of change come to fruition. Donald Trump wove that wave of change to the White House and, along the way, he brought some real reformers with him into his administration. While there were a variety of big names that were added to his administration, Scott Pruitt, and Ben Carson to name a few, it was his underrated nomination for the Secretary of Education position that may prove to be the most fruitful. Betsy DeVos, a staunch Republican from the state of Michigan, was brought on board and narrowly confirmed in a contentious Senate hearing. Now as the leader of the Department of Education, DeVos has a long list of tasks ahead of her. While DeVos doesn’t register the same amount of media attention as some of her Trump Administration contemporaries, she certainly has a history to bank on if you are a conservative.

We could spend time going into Betsy DeVos’ upbringing but that wouldn’t be a fruitful use of our time. Instead, we’ll say that Betsy DeVos was born and raised in the state of Michigan into a wealthy, religious, and conservative family. DeVos was raised to believe in the core aspects surrounding faith, family, and reformation and she has used those ideas to become the politician that she is today. In Washington D.C., Betsy DeVos’ history won’t count for much. Instead, people are going to pay close attention to the work that she is attempting to do and that is, in essence, reform the state of education in America.

As a proud reformer, Betsy DeVos truly believes that it is her job to improve the world around her in a meaningful way. In the field of education, particularly public education, there are so many different places that DeVos can make a difference. DeVos will address education reform by doubling down on what has made her an icon in the conservative movement: school choice. School choice is a concept that was originally developed by Milton Friedman more than 50 years ago. Nowadays, the topic is more associated with DeVos than Friedman and her effort is a huge reason as to why.

Betsy DeVos has worked to spread school choice to states all around the country over the past 30 years. Alongside her husband, Dick DeVos, Betsy DeVos has managed to push school choice into 17 states and more than 30 private institutions. As of her most recent counting, more than 250,000 students are currently benefiting from school choice. Now, with a Federal position and the Presidential mandate at her back, Betsy DeVos can seriously ramp up those numbers over the coming years. Conservatives finally have an education reformer to rally behind and Betsy DeVos will be seeking to take advantage of their passion and enthusiasm in order to continue fighting to change the state of education throughout America. Only time will tell if she succeeds, but things are looking up.
