The Chainsmokers are an American EDM-pop duo formed in 2012 by Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. Their music, according to Taggart, is a blend of hip-hop, dance, pop and indie, citing deadmau5 and Linkin Park as influences. Pall is responsible for DJ-ing duties, while Taggart is the duo’s producer, vocalist and writer. The two achieved great heights of popularity after their breakthrough single in 2014. The Chainsmokers have an extensive list of singles to their name, as well as 3 EPs and 1 full-length album, released in 2017 which peaked at number 1 in the Billboard 200.
When talking about the beginnings of the collaboration, Pall notes that both of them knew what they brought to the table. Upon understanding that both of them share a similar music states and they both are ambitious and want to make the project work, they worked extensively on their music and to shape their identity as artists. Pall also mentions that the two always push themselves harder towards becoming better artists and they want people to relate more and more to their music on a deeper level.
Before being one half of The Chainsmokers, Pall was acting as a DJ on the New York City scene and had a small career, but he considered it only side work. He decided to give his DJing career a proper shot however, and ended up quitting his job after his manager introduced him to Taggart and the two started working on the music project.

Alex Pall states that their live show is forever changing, and as the duo’s audience expands they have to keep pushing themselves. He mentions that they do not want to keep doing the same things and they bring it upon themselves to offer a new and exciting show. According to him, they are taking things a step further in regards to the production and their performance. He declares to be proud of the fact that they perform their songs live, as it transcends the typical DJ. It is important for them to give people new experiences and be at the forefront of pushing boundaries.
